ANNUAL BIOMASS CONSUMPTION
Wood chips processed
October 19, 2021
M&W JAWO Sampling is proud to announce the successful delivery and commissioning of the world’s largest fully automated sampling system for wood chips at HOFOR’s Amager Power Plant, in the new BIO4 unit (formerly “AMV4”). This 500 MW biomass unit replaces the coal-fired unit 3 making a pivotal shift in energy production.
The automated sampling solution ensures highly accurate and representative samples from the 1.2 million tons of wood chips used annually at the plant. It significantly improves efficiency and safety by eliminating seven manual sampling operations per day and enabling continuous 24/7 operation.

Up to 30,000 tonnes per ship
The system is designed with two parallel sampling lines to ensure continuous operation and redundancy.
Featuring: Two cross belt samplers (each taking four sub-lots of 75 litres per hour); four screw conveyors for controlled feeding to four Rotary Tube Dividers; two 16-meter tall bucket elevators for reject material; four dividers and sample collectors with splitters.
Through this project M&W JAWO Sampling has again demonstrated our ability to deliver high-quality and customized, automated industrial sampling solutions for large-scale biomass and energy plants.

The BIO4 unit plays a pivotal role in Copenhagen’s ambition to become the world’s first CO2-neutral capital. By replacing 500,000–600,000 tonnes of coal annually, the plant now supplies 60% of the city’s heating demand from biomass, a significant step towards a sustainable future.
This project builds M&W JAWO Sampling’s long history of collaboration with the Amager Power Plant, including an automated coal sampling system in 1989 and a wood pellet sampling system in 2012.
