Annulus Pressure Relief System – Oil & Gas Well Treatment & Intervention

M&W Engineering invented the Annulus Pressure Relief System (APRS) together with Maersk Oil & Gas (Total) based on burst discs similarly to those used in the nuclear power industry for oil and gas well treatment and intervention up to 10,000 psi (689 bar):

  • High accuracy (+/-2%) of providing pressure relief at exact required pressure (accuracy can vary for PRVs which typically have only +/- 5%).
  • Quickly continue operation after a burst; a burst disc can be replaced easily while at sea (the PRV will have to be sent back onshore to be re-set; thus mobilizing backups are required).
  • Proven and documented long-standing track record – DNV certified.
  • Safer to use than traditional PRVs.
  • Several systems can be installed in parallel enabling isolating discs which have been burst and you can continue with back-up in less than 30 seconds.

The APRS has been used world-wide by 10+ oil and gas companies and service companies such as Shell, BP, Maersk Oil & Gas (now Total), Hess, Aker BP, Itacha Energy Halliburton, Schlumberger and Stimwell Services for 1,000+ well stimulation jobs on – and offshore. It has been widely used in the Norwegian, British and Danish parts of the North Sea, as well as other areas such as the Middle East, Kazakhstan and the South China Sea.
