Part of the world’s first operational test of a superconducting cable with a polymer cryostat

THE CHALLENGE

SuperNode, a pioneer in next-generation energy transmission, faced a critical mechanical and thermal challenge: establishing a stable current lead from ambient temperature to a superconducting cable operating at −220 °C. No standard component was available to solve the task. It had to be designed and manufactured from the ground up by a partner with both engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

 

THE SOLUTION

In close collaboration with SuperNode, our in-house engineering team designed and developed a custom current lead with an integrated heat exchanger. The assignment required heat transfer, mechanical stability and sealing performance to be considered as an integrated whole from the outset.

We managed the mechanical design, thermal analysis, material selection, CNC machining, certified welding, assembly, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and project management—all under one roof.

 

THE RESULT

Mark & Wedell delivered the prototypes in 2025 as a key part of the world’s first operational test of a superconducting cable with a polymer cryostat. By bringing design, machining, welding and testing together in-house, we significantly reduced development risk and helped bring SuperNode closer to the commercial realisation of next-generation electrification.
